Harpers Ferry sits where the Potomac and Shenandoah rivers meet, with a compact historic district built into the hills above the water. Learn how John Brown, an abolitionist who led an 1859 raid on the federal armory, helped push the nation toward the Civil War. Then connect that story to Storer College, a school founded after the war to educate formerly enslaved people, and the Niagara Movement, an early civil rights organization led by W.E.B. Du Bois. After a short orientation, choose the museums, river views, shops, and lunch stop that interest you.
After the short Great Falls Travel orientation walk, travelers will have several hours to explore Lower Town independently. Great Falls Travel will remain on site and available during the visit. Museum operations and park shuttle timing remain subject to National Park Service schedules.
Morning
8:15 to about 10:15 a.m.
Gather at Saint Augustine's Church at 8:15 a.m. and depart at 8:30. During the ride, the Great Falls Travel tour manager introduces Harpers Ferry and the stories that shaped it. Arrive at the park's main Visitor Center around 10:00 to 10:15, take a comfort stop, and board the National Park Service shuttle into Lower Town.
Late morning
About 10:45 to 11:30 a.m.
Begin with an easy-paced orientation walk through Lower Town, the historic riverfront district at the center of Harpers Ferry. The tour manager points out the principal museums, John Brown's Fort, shops, lunch choices, and the route to The Point so everyone can choose what to explore next.
Midday and afternoon
About 11:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m.
Choose the museums and exhibits that interest you, enjoy lunch on your own, browse the shops, or walk to The Point for river views. The Great Falls Travel tour manager remains in Harpers Ferry and available throughout the afternoon.
Return
About 3:30 to 6:30 p.m.
Meet the group at 3:30 p.m. and take the park shuttle back to the Visitor Center. Depart Harpers Ferry at approximately 4:15 and return to Saint Augustine's Church around 6:00 to 6:30 p.m., depending on traffic.
